In demand as a soloist, Mr. Manickam has performed with the Boston Chamber Orchestra, the Cambridge Choral Society, the South Coast Community Chorale, the University of Massachusetts Orchestra, the Southern New Hampshire Wind Ensemble, the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, and, most recently, the Clarion University Wind Ensemble.
His professional career also includes principal trumpet positions with the Indian Hill Symphony, New Hampshire Symphony, Salisbury Symphony, Vermont Symphony, New Bedford Symphony, Taipei Sinfonietta, and Cape Ann Symphony. A founding member of the award-winning Bala Brass Quintet, he has performed internationally, with recent tour stops in Japan, Canada, Thailand, and Australia. His strong interest in contemporary music has driven him to help commission and premiere numerous chamber and solo works for brass instruments, collaborating with composers including Norman Bolter, Wycliffe Gordon, Robert Bradshaw, and Jeremy Spindler. He has also appeared as a featured artist at major conferences such as the International Trumpet Guild Conference, the New York Brass Conference, and the Tuba and Euphonium Conference.
Committed to music education, Mr. Manickam has led master classes and clinics at leading conservatories and schools across the country, including the University of Connecticut, SUNY Purchase, Shenandoah Conservatory, Wisconsin Lutheran College, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Bridgewater State College, Salem State College, and Phillips Academy. His teaching experience also includes faculty positions at the University of Massachusetts Boston, The Boston Conservatory's Special Programs, New England Music Camp, and Boston University's Tanglewood Institute.
Alongside his work with Bala, Mr. Manickam currently serves as principal trumpet with the New England Repertory Orchestra and Music Director at St. John's Preparatory School. He is also on the faculty at Keene State College in New Hampshire, where he leads the trumpet studio, coaches chamber music, and directs both the Keene State Brass Ensemble and the Keene State Orchestra.
